CLASS TITLE:  Cemetery Maintenance Worker III

 
 

 


PURPOSE OF THE CLASSIFICATION:   

Acts as a working lead in performing a variety of unskilled, semiskilled and skilled tasks; performs as a member of a work group or oversees workers on individual job assignments engaged in planned or scheduled general maintenance or renovation activities involving City properties and facilities.

 


ESSENTIAL TASKS:

=        Oversees and operates various types of machinery including tractors, backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, push mowers, riding mowers, weed trimmers and compressors. 

=        Prunes shrubs, trims trees and plants flowers and shrubs using hand tools.

=        Backfills, packs and sows grass on new or sunken graves; refills sunken graves.

=        Performs building and grounds maintenance; cleans restrooms and office/break room areas; removes old flowers from grave sites; empties trash cans; picks up litter.

=        Patches streets; mixes cement; repairs vases; moves, repairs and adjusts headstones as needed.

=        Locates graves and marking pins for grave sites. 

=        Changes fluids, spark plugs, fixes flats and performs other basic mechanic duties.

=        Maintains the irrigation system.

=        Performs minor repairs to buildings, including carpentry and painting.

=        Digs ditches and trenches, lays pipe, installs and repairs valves.

=        Operates, repairs and maintains equipment and public facilities.

=        May occasionally be required to sell grave spaces and schedule funerals.

=        Performs other work as necessary and or assigned.

=        Must report to work on a regular and timely basis.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Cemetery Maintenance Worker III reports directly to the Cemetery Superintendent. 

The Cemetery Maintenance Worker III oversees the Cemetery Maintenance Worker II positions and seasonal temps.

 


QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Experience:  High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience as a trades helper or maintenance laborer in any of the construction and maintenance trades with at least one (1) year of experience leading and coordinating or providing general crew oversight or supervision required.  Preference will be given to those with experience involving the operation of light to medium construction equipment. 

 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:  Good knowledge of manual labor work practices, methods, tools and materials of varied semiskilled general maintenance work, grounds keeping and landscaping; good knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work; the use and maintenance of digging equipment; mechanical maintenance procedures; basic irrigation system operations; safe and efficient operation of equipment; safe work practices; supervisory principles and practices.  Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; lead a crew involved in the maintenance of a cemetery; operate equipment and make minor mechanical repairs to equipment; read maps and other documents necessary to locate interment locations; perform physical labor; deal with people in emotional stress; provide effective customer service; and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.  Requires the ability to courteously and tactfully communicate with fellow workers, supervisors, other members of the organization and the public in giving and receiving information.  Skilled in the operation of light and heavy equipment used in cemetery maintenance and operations.

Physical Requirements:  The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.  On a case by case basis, reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Physical requirements include frequent walking and standing; frequent lifting of over sixty (60) pounds; occasional carrying of objects weighing over sixty (60) pounds; constant reaching and handling; occasional balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling and climbing; vision, speech and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks.  Punctuality and reasonable attendance is essential.     Must submit to drug screening and fitness to work physical exam.

Licenses and Certificates:  Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class D driver’s license is required. 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:  Work in this classification is primarily outdoors.  Will travel to other City locations as required.  Exposure to wet, hot, cold and/or humid conditions.  Requires ability to work weekends and holidays. 

Notice:  This classification is a “safety sensitive” position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws.  As a “safety sensitive” classification, the employee will be subject to drug and alcohol testing including random testing.  Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening.  Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse the employee from the testing process or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana. 

MINIMUM PAY:  $15.30/hr.  Excellent employee benefits (insurance, vacation leave, sick leave, retirement, holidays).

WORK HOURS:  8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Requires ability to work weekends and holidays.

WORK LOCATION:  City of Muskogee Public Works Department, Greenhill Cemetery, 1500 North York Street, Muskogee, Oklahoma.
